Round 1 Austria
EverythingF1 Qualifying Report
Finally, we have a qualifying session to report on. Its taken 7 months to get to this point so without further delay lets get into it.
Due to the Covid 19 pandemic we have a very different season for 2020, this is the first of 2 Grand Prix at the Redbull Ring in Austria and the 1st of 3 races in 3 weeks.
2020 has not seen any changes to the Qualifying format with 3 sessions Q1,Q2 and Q3.
Qualifying 1 is 18 minutes long with the 5 slowest cars eliminated, Qualifying 2 is 15 minutes long with the 5 slowest cars eliminated.
The final session is for the top 10 shoot-out, this session is 12 minutes long and will determine 1 to 10 places on the grid.
The fastest lap for Q1 was set by Verstappen with a 1:04.024.
The bottom 5 drivers were
20th Latifi (Williams)
19th Raikkonen (Alfa Romeo)
18th Giovinazzi (Alfa Romeo)
17th Russell (Williams)
16th Magnussen (HAAS)
No real surprises with the bottom 5 drivers, Alfa Romeo driver Antonio Giovinazzi took a trip across the gravel during his last run, effectively ending his chance to get into Q2.
15th Grosjean (HAAS)
14th Ocon (Renault)
13th Kvyat (Alpha Tauri)
12th Gasly (Alpha Tauri)
11th Vettel (Ferrari)
The first big shock of the 2020 season happen in this session as 4 time world champion Sebastian Vettel has been knocked out, qualifying 11th for tomorrow’s race. Another driver that would not be happy with his performance has to be Esteban Ocon in the Renault, 14th for the French driver is just not really good enough.
Q3 and Pole
The first pole position of 2020 goes to Valtteri Bottas with a new lap record of 1:02.939, The Finnish driver put in an amazing lap to secure the first pole for the 2020 season.
Bottas’s teammate Lewis Hamilton qualifies in 2nd 0.021 seconds behind, with Max Verstappen qualifying in 3rd.
An honourable mention has to go the Lando Norris of Mclaren, who qualifies in an impressive 4th place, his best qualifying position in Formula 1.
Racing point will be happy with their qualifying performance, Perez qualified in 6th place, matching the lap time of Albon in the Redbull.
POLE: Bottas 1:02.939 (Lap Record)
2nd: Hamilton 1:02.951
3rd: Verstappen 1:03.477
4th: Norris 1:03.626
5th Albon 1:03.868
6th Perez 1:03.868
7th Leclerc 1:03.923
8th Sainz 1:03.971
9th Stroll 1:04.029
10th Riccardo 1:04.239
Tomorrow is set to be an amazing race with the Mercedes cars looking in great form, Max Verstappen in 3rd place but on a different tyre than anyone in the top 10. It does look that the next 2 races are going to be damage limitation for Ferrari, who start in 11th (Vettel) and 7th (Leclerc).
Looking further down the grid, Renault can’t be overly impressed with 14th for Ocon and 10th for Riccardo, although Riccardo was hampered by Yellow flags during his last qualifying run after Bottas took a trip on to the grass.
HAAS’s form seems to be the same as last season with a poor 15th and 16th.. The Alfa Romeo cars and the Williams cars are at the back, however the Williams of Russell seems to be closer to the rest of the pack than in previous seasons.
The race starts at 1410 (UK time) I cant wait to see what happens ……..
